100 Nightmares From Afar
an experiment in human terror by Addison Godel
All cultures in some way or another believe in the idea of special beings whose very existence implies a crossroads of the fates. For Christians and Jews, there is the Messiah, a single figure around whom the destiny of all people revolves. For X-Men fans, there are the Twelve - a cadre of mutants crucial the development of the human race in the next few decades. The problem with these existing belief systems is that they vastly underestimate the number of individuals out there with the power to bring the world revolution. A mere One? Nonsense. Even Twelve is preoposterous.
The good news? Modern pseudoscience has at last yielded the number so long sought:
One hundred.
The bad news? Preliminary projections indicate that nearly every one of these beings is indifferent or outright hostile to the needs of the average human. Most of them are powerful enough to destroy the uninitiated by their very appearance. And all of them are unknown to you, the reader. Until now.
To date, 31 of these beings from beyond the Deep have been catalogued at this site. While most people will be fortunate enough to never encounter one of them in person, I insist on educating the population as a public service. Should you ever find yourself face to face with one of the Hundred, remember what you've learned here, and take any chance to escape.
A side note to other warlocks, professional or amateur - if you believe you have identified a Nightmare, let me know and send me an image as proof of your discovery. I have developed a complex battery of tests to see if an entity being examined is indeed a Nightmare - or, if it lacks the needed fate alignment and terror powers to qualify, what exact sort of lesser daemon it is. Contact me here with your findings, and good luck. Several times now outside suggestions have been documented, described, annotated, and acknowledged by me, and have entered the Nightmarothic System shortly after.
And now, there can be no escaping from the path we have set out before us. It begins.
