Holes, by Louis Sachar
published 1998 - read 2004

One of the best pieces of young adult fiction I've stumbled
on in a long time, it combines clever narrative tricks and a fable-like
superstructure with the kind of matter-of-factly offbeat scenarios that
made Sachar (Sideways Stories From Wayside School) a big name in
the first place. Instantly memorable and highly entertaining.
