Addison Godel's Evangelion Fanfic Archive
Welcome to the blandest fanfic page on the net!

September 2000 - I'm insane, but so are you.
I'll leave the update text from the June update below so everybody can get sort of caught up if they missed it before. I'll clean it out someday, once the current renovations are complete. Implicit in that statement is the fact that the renovations aren't complete. But they *are* in progress. You'll see as you scroll through the archive that a number of fics have been yanked for the reasons I outline below. I've also added descriptive text and some better formatting here and there. When the reforms are complete, whenever that is, all of the fics that I keep will have some sort of blurb explaining what they are or why I kept them around. Anyway, enjoy.
June 2000 - Start spreadin' the news...

After careful consideration of my personal priorities, combined with a thorough combing of Umma's hit statistics and a few blank stares at the rather slow people who insisted on submitting me fic all through the past year or so, I've decided to take advantage of the apparent success of this page and reopen it (sort of) for business. I'll explain the "sort of" in a sec. First, some personal elaborations: yes, this is a shameless marketing move. Umma has grown, however insignificantly, since I shut down updates of Eva-arc last May (or whenever), and I want to channel the still-lucrative fanbase here (that means you sheep) into the glorious pastures of my other sites. I think it's worth my time, and I think it's worth yours. There's a hitch, though. I don't keep up with Eva fic the way I used to. |
In fact, I hardly keep up with the stuff at all. The only piece I read regularly is Neon Exodus, a guilty pleasure to some but an open, unashamed thrill ride to me. I occasionally glance at the stuff coming through on the FFML, and some of it's pretty good. But I'm not as neck-deep in the genre I was a couple years ago, when I first realized how a big Eva fanfic archive might be of interest to a few people. I also have zero interest in returning to the hectic days where I automatically archived everything, and practically drowned in a sea of fanfic submissions. So please, do not start sending me your fic. I will not put it up.
Here's the deal. If you want the most complete, uneditorialized Evangelion fanfic archive possible,go back in time to when I started this page. Nowadays, for completeness, you must sacrifice vaguely decent site design and visit SDAT. I'm envisioning something more in the vein of the beautifully designed and organized In Other Words, only my site is going to lack the beautiful design and organization.
In other words (ha!), if you're one of those types, and I know you are, who got online today and said to yourself, "You know, I really want to read what Addison Godel considers the cream of the crop of Evangelion fic, especially from a couple years ago when he had time to actually read all of it, and specifically meaning that portion of the cream of the crop that he can actually remember, since he certainly hasn't had time to reread everything..." et cetera... then stick around.
In the next few weeks, or whenever I finish a couple of the sections that I'm hoping to promote through this site, expect another update, where I've gone through some portion of the fics and yanked the ones that I didn't specifically remember as being personal favorites. Authors: In some cases, yes, this is a comment to the extent of "Your fic sucked and I don't want it on my site." However, I hope most of you take it as "Your fic might have been good, but I'm not sure I ever had time to read it in the beginning, and if I did, it just didn't stand out in my admittedly flawed tastes. Either that, or it did stand out, but I can't remember it anymore." It's not a very exact science. But that's the deal. In a while, expect this site to re-emerge from the long period of purification, and achieve its perfect form at last. Or something like that.
In the meantime, just to whet your whistles, I've added the first two (and, sadly, only) chapters of Untitled Evangelion Epic. I helped edit this series, and it's by a friend of mine, so I'm a tad biased, but I really consider it to be a top-notch piece of parody, especially for a first fic. It's a humorous satire of the dire straits Evangelion fic was in around the middle of 1999. If you'd like to see a continuation, consider emailing the author, one David "Indy" Uzumeri.
That's all for now,
--- Addison Godel (agodel@ummagurau.com)
My sources are many and varied; links are provided on the links page (cool, huh?). The only source available to me that I didn't take advantage of is the Fanfic Mailing List; many of the stories posted there are still in the rough draft stage and I'd hate to rush an author by asking about a fic I've only seen on FFML.
All fics in *.txt format for the convenience of near everybody. If for some reason you -have- to have it in html or gzip or such, try the links at the bottom. Also try 'em if these txts just don't look right (I've been computering for ten years and I -still- don't understand formatting). Or try loading them in another program---I've found that supposed formatting problems in some of these fics "disappear" when they're loaded in Internet Explorer (ducks) etc.
In general, I really wouldn't recommend you read any Eva fic until you've seen the whole show. Honestly, spoilers tend to slip into the -oddest- places! Anyway, it's been my experience that I enjoy fic more when I've got a maximum of exposure to the source material. Or something. Fair warning.
***
One final note before I get to the actual fics...the real credit here goes to the authors who created all this fabulous stuff. Do, do, do send them your thoughts on these fics---there's nothing a fanfic writer likes more than feedback, at least in my experience. Some of the fics, unfortunately, didn't come with email addresses attached, so we've still got a bit of a way to go in this department. If your fic is in here with no email address and you want your address in there, tell me now! (My address is agodel@ummagurau.com, just to get that over with.

The Actual Fics
Eh, I think it's cute.
Age of Evangelion, by Christopher "God-Boy" Angel
Sadly, Mr. Angel has no plans to continue this series, whose first few episodes displayed a good, believable, down-to-earth "What if?" fic that actually seemed to be going somewhere, rather than running on the fumes of its (admittedly inventive) premise.

Garden of Eva, by Jim Lazar
Yes, it's juvenile. Yes, it's repetitive. Yes, it inadvertently spawned a host of horrifically inferior and far more distasteful ripoffs. But Garden of Eva, inexplicably, still entertains me, with its careening plot, soap-opera twists, and over-the-top romps. Note that due to restrictions on my own site, I've had to excise a couple of lemon side stories; GoE itself is to be considered a constant lime-fest.
God Hood, by C. "c-mann" Fraser
Gomi, by Patrick Drazen (Poem)
Haven of the Dolls, by Eeichiroo
He's An Angel, by Jeffrey "Oneshot" Wong
Helping Hands, by Luna Ayanami
H.I., by Kei Masaki
Home, by Corey Holmes
I remember this fic as being a little rough around the edges - often shoddy grammar, and a lot of ideas not fully developed. And yet, I retain so many images from it in my mind; it must have some merit at least in terms of memorable concepts. At the time of this writing, Colmes was hardly a master, but he held my attention, despite the sporadic publishing schedule and the difficulty of keeping track of twenty chapters of fic.
I Mustn't Run Away, by Andrew Huang
The original warm-and-fuzzy-feeling Eva fic. Sweet, realistic, and often inexplicably moving. Really tugs at the ol' heartstrings. Note the sequel, below.
In Other Words, by Andrew Huang (Sequel to I Mustn't Run Away)
The aftermath of IMRA; it's more subtle, slow-paced, filling in the characterization gaps and, from a long view, suggesting the potential for a lengthy, character-driven series following this plotline.
In The Language of the Lost, by Antaeus Feldspar
It's Just Been One of Those Lives, by Mark Eymer (saotome@micron.net)
It's not gone, by Alighieri Hijo (Songfic)
Judgment Day, by Artemis (Crossover with Armageddon)
Kaworu's Choice, by Jeffrey Hosmer
Life, The Universe, and Evangelions, by Michael Ahlf (Crossover with HHGTTG)
Love Changes Everything, by The English Shinji
Love Lost, Love Gained, by James Lee
Mind of diamond, heart of paper, by Alighieri Hijo
Misato's Christmas Party, by Steve Pardue
Mother, by Zhou Tai An
Mothers and Sons: Shinji, by Anand Rao (from larger, unrelated, fanfic series)
Neverending Suffering, by Kevin Shiue
Neon Exodus Evangelion, by Eyrie Productions, Unlimited (Linked off-site by author request) (Eyrie, Crossover with Eva)
A lot of people get turned off of this series early on because the main character is, admittedly, a new character, and he's relentlessly hip, romantic, and ingenious for the first third of the story so far. But gradually, something starts happening; as the people around DJ Croft become more and more believable, and as he himself becomes a more three-dimensional character, his one-liners transcend fanfic-writer goofiness and become the sort of kickass stuff you'd expect in a really top-notch action-adventure-thriller picture. And that's, ultimately, what NXE is. It hasn't ever personally moved me or driven me to tears, but it's entertained the hell out of me for years, and that's about as high a recommendation as I can give for such stuff.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Other Paths, by James Grabowski
Paths I
Paths I - 1:1
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Variations on A Theme, by James Grabowski and Geoff Upchurch
I was a prereader on VoaT for a time; I eventually was dissuaded by the authors' occasional hardheadedness (this was also why I stopped sending unsolicited C&C to Eyrie sometime around Exodus 2:5), but the fic itself is actually darn good. Definitely set aside a few afternoons for it, though, this fic is beyond huge, and does, admittedly, bog down here and there. As with Exodus, though, there's a nice mix of personal chaos, heavy adventure, and an intensely dramatic version of the Eva cast that sucks you in, soap-opera style.
Volume One - The Irony of Life / But We Happen To Know...
Volume Two - Changing Faces / Subjective Reality
Volume Three - Tower Rising / Epitaph of the Soul
Volume Four - Find Your Own Truth / A 'Human' Salvation
Neon Genesis Evanjellydonut, by Andrew Huang
The original, classic Eva sillyfic. Unlike most of its imitators, Evanjellydonut is actually funny, inventive, and possessed of a plot that's actually engaging on its own merits, even aside from the comedy. A lighthearted romp that, in later years, I often looked back on with fondness.
Ni-sen juu go, by Alighieri Hijo (Songfic)
Of Death And Love, by Phillip Masters
Of Evas and Motels, by Phillip Masters
Of Ikari And Ayanami, by Mee Robinson
Paradise Lost, by Andy Kent (Crossover w/ Ranma) (No relation to the doujin)
A lot of people have taken stabs at Ranma and Eva crossovers...I like Paradise Lost best. After a little bit of wobbliness at the start, as Kent works to lay down the work that will make the crossing-over work, the fic takes off. Unlike most writers, Avatar is pretty capable, and expert in both Ranma and Eva. His Ranma knowledge is so extensive I often found myself wondering if some new concept was original or taken from deep within the arcane lore of the Ranma manga. But it all clicks, and has a chemistry lacking in most crossovers.
