FYRidicule's Survivor Challenge Reference - Rewards Defined

Reward Type

Description

Appearances
Big Feast Typically an individual or shared reward.  The winner gets a big spread of food set up somewhere on the island, perhaps with a colorful journey there and some touch of native color.  Feasts are often included in the Elaborate Trip, but are simply ticked off by Jeff as one of many things the winner gets to do, rather than the main focus. Car You win whatever really stupid-looking car is this year’s car sponsor (the same one that the Sole Survivor will get as a bonus prize).  ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE THROUGH CHRIST.... except giving these poor, starving wretches a dignified and/or compact automobile.  Also, as has been frequently noted, the winner of the car never wins the game, even when the fact that they won the car is unknown to the others (S7).  Spoooooooky! Date With Jeff Probst A bar date with Jeff Probst where you get to watch newly-edited footage of the first episode of the show.  This is one of the most clever pieces of game design by Mark Burnett, as it is a reward that you do not want to win, creating an interesting game dynamic during the challenge.  (Actually, I feel the same way about most of the Cars they compete for too, but...) S1:12
Elaborate Trip The winner (usually with someone they select) goes and does something ‘life-changing.’  This is often an over-nighter, and tends to involve some brush with native culture or a dramatic view of the local landscape, etc.  Sometimes hard to distinguish from the Big Feast.  This also includes trips to cruise ships and the like.  By a long shot this category claims the most rewards in Survivor history, for good reason: it gets the action away from camp (which makes for more varied TV), it gives opportunities for small groups of Survivors (those on the trip and those left behind) to plot in isolation, and lets us see some of the "local color" which otherwise can only be alluded to in Memorize The Story challenges.  Oddly, S5 and S6 only had one Elaborate Trip each (S1 also, but that show is weird).  I have no idea why. Family Visit The reward-winner has a family member visit and spend time with them, or sometimes with the whole tribe.  Sometimes they bring care packages for everybody.  Thrill to the idiosyncracies of Survivor loved ones: clueless (Sean's dad), boring (Kathy's son), vaguely sinister (Thunder Dan), and more! Food Supplies Any quantity of transportable food which the Survivors get to take back to camp.  Only appears as a tribal reward; it wouldn't really mean anything to compete for food which gets brought back to camp for everybody, would it? S1:5

Freedom From/For Outcasts Component of the Outcast twist; the outcome of the challenge determines the fate of the Outcasts.  If the Outcasts come in last, nothing happens.  If the Outcasts come in second, the 3rd place tribe must vote out one person, to be replaced by an Outcast.  If the Outcasts come in first, both tribes vote out one person, each to be replaced by an Outcast. S7:7
Highly Trained Assistants Pleasantly unusual reward; the winning tribe gets a lengthy visit from a crack team of survivalists who reveal useful information about the area (leaves you can eat, things like that).  This seems like it'd be really useful, so I hope it comes back, but I worry it wasn't telegenic enough. S5:3
Horrible, Gross Junk Food The poor winner of this challenge is forced to consume awful junk food (usually provided by sponsors) that makes them feel worse. S1:10

Immunity Cutlass Winning Survivor goes to Tribal Council, but the others cannot vote for him/her.  Special Pearl Islands "pirate themed" version.  Coolest looking immunity item ever. All post-merge S7 episodes
Immunity Idol Tiki statue; the tribe that wins it does not go to Tribal Council this round.  Takes various "local culture based" forms. Nearly all pre-merge epiosodes
Immunity Necklace Tiki jewelry; theSurvivor that wins it goes to Tribal Council, but the others cannot vote for her/him.  Takes various "local culture based" forms. All post-merge episodes S1-S6
Luxuries Hard to distinguish entirely from Survival Equipment.  This is how I label stuff that may not be directly of use, but improves the conditions around camp, and hence may make the tribe feel better.  Soapy stuff is popular, also blankets and pillows.  This stuff also appeared in the Target Crate, but I consider that a distinct reward as it's something of a "mystery package." Map Piece Tribe wins part of a map to a cache concealed somewhere on their turf.  In S7 this was a shocking disappointment: the one tribe that dug up its treasure did so in the shortest amount of time possible (they won all three map pieces consecutively) but much of the treasure's contents were spoiled and disgusting.  CBS really dropped the ball on this potentially very cool moment. All pre-Outcast S7 episodes
Movie Night Uninteresting reward where the winner(s) get to watch a movie of some arguable relation to their situation as castaways.  The absolute rock-bottom of the Survivor 3 creative barrel.  Let’s hope this never gets revisited.  It wasn’t even interesting with the added gimmick that the winners hated each other. S3:9
Not Quite A Family Visit Phone call home, video from home, letter from home, etc.  Yay.  More or less gone since S2 despite its appearance in S5.  The videos are cute but kind of disappointing, and the letters don't really tell us much.  Now that it's common for the family members to all stop by to participate in some sort of challenge, it's a lot easier to milk emotions out of people being physically reunited with their loved ones.  Note that it's still possible for the letters and such to show up as prizes in the food auction (S6) or simply a generous gift from Jeff (S7, episode 14).   S1:8

Screw Rest Of Tribe Weird twist aspect of the Family Visit reward in S7: those who didn't win the reward have to go live on an unnamed new island for a day.  Oddly, we saw very little of their time there and their feelings on it, presumably because there was so much else going on in the episode.  Several posters online have noted this as a very curious addition to the game, and I agree, enough to mark it as a separate reward. S7:11
Still-Living Food Source The Survivors win something they’re supposed to eat or which can produce food, but which is still alive.  In other words, they win chickens.  This is fun because it acts as a source of future domestic scenes around camp: the Survivors playfully decide which chicken to kill first, run around chasing the chickens when they get loose, etc. S1:5

S3:5
S5:4
Survival Equipment Things of specific, utilitarian purpose for surviving in the relevant location.  Fishing supplies are a popular choice.  For the most part this appears in the first RC, presumably because this means the most use will be gotten out of whatever is won.  I would speculate, though, that this also tends to accelerate winning streaks between tribes - whoever gets this useful stuff early on would seem to have a substantial edge going into the following challenges.  But maybe not. Target Crate Box of creature comforts packaged and provided by Target, big-box discounty retailer and one-time Survivor sponsor. S1:4

Tribal Looting Milder version of the Tribal Raid; the winning tribe sends one person to the other tribe's beach to abscond with one item of their choice. All pre-Outcast S7 episodes
Tribal Raid One tribe gets to go on a Super Toy Run in the other tribe’s camp, taking whatever they want with the exception of some posted hands-off items.  Really, really brutal. S4:5
Tribe Member Twist reward added on as a surprise bonus to an immunity challenge: the winning tribe takes a tribe member from the other tribe, but they only keep her/him through the next reward challenge. S7:4
