Song:
Magneto and Titanium Man
Artist: Wings
Album: Venus & Mars
Sample Lyric: "And the Crimson Dynamo came along for the
ride!"
Ampersands (out of 5): & & & & |
Here's
the setup: This song is told from the perspective of a man who is conned by
three Marvel supervillains into assaulting an officer of the law, under the
pretense that this officer is actually a bank robber.
That
alone should be enough to sell you on it, but just in case it's not, let me
assure you that this song is also a damn fine performance by McCartney and
company. It's spirited, elegantly produced (as well as anything by Wings
is, anyway), and held together by the surprisingly effective marriage of
McCartney's typically busy bassline and a resonant yet bouncy keyboard
part. It doesn't really sound like anything else the band made, and while
that could be said about half of Wings's library, in this case it's definitely a
positive thing.
And don't forget that kooky plotline! I mean, come
on....this is a song whose climax comes with the thrilling revelation:
"Then it occurred to me / You couldn't be bad / Magneto is mad, Titanium
too! / And the Crimson Dynamo / he just couldn't cut it no mo'!
/ You were the laaaaaaaaaaw." Comic book rock-n-roll
is a tough balancing act, and
I think they did a decent job here.
