Pastorale was an attempt at several things that had been cooking around in my brain for a while directly before and after my March 2001 trip to England. While I was in London, my friend Jami reintroduced me to the rich and varied world of independently published, semiautobiographical comics. One of the consequences of this was that I became interested in the idea of drawing something a little more low-key and meditative than the madcap madness of Umgurai or Russell. The result was the Pastorale, hastily scribbled out one fateful Saturday night in my friend Voss's dorm room. The two-page length was a departure for me, as was the somewhat open-ended pacing; I'm not entirely satisfied with the results, but the piece is an experiment, so hey.
