"Yum Yum, Give Me Some" Pumpkin Chocolate Chippers

This is a very slight variation on a recipe given to me by my old college colleague Leah Miller.  It yields 7 to 9 dozen small, friendly, autumnal cookies wiht a uniquely soft texture.  The neatest thing is how easily and naturally it veganizes: just sub in vegan margarine and vegan chocolate chips!

2 cups sugar
1 cup butter
1 15.5 oz. can pumpkin puree
2 tsp vanilla extract
4 cups flour
2 tsp baking soda
2 tsp ground cinnamon
2 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp cloves
1.5 cups semisweet chocolate chips
1 "pinch of love"
1.  Preheat oven to 375.
2.  Cream butter and sugar; add pumpkin and vanilla, and cream those in too.
3.  In a separate bowl, mix flour, baking soda, and spices.
4.  Add dry ingredients slowly to creamed mixture, beating well after each addition.
5.  Add chocolate chips and pinch of love - stir like you mean it!
6.  Drop by stingy tablespoons onto an ungreased cookie sheet.  Bake 11-14 minutes and immediately transfer to cooling racks.

Note that you may fiddle at will with the combinations of spices (allspice would fit in nicely, for example) ... but the pinch of love is indispensible.
