Fancy-Type Thumbprints

Adapted from a recipe by one "Patsy" posting to AllRecipes.com, these cookies pull a couple of nice little twists on the classic thumbprint formula.  Something to try: Nix the kisses and fill the cookies with fruit preserves just before serving.  Could be good...?

I.  Cookies

1/2 cup butter
2/3 cup sugar
1 egg, separated
2 Tb milk
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup flour
1/3 cup cocoa
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup walnuts, well chopped

II.  Filling

1/2 cup confectioner's sugar
1 Tb butter
2 tsp milk
1/4 tsp vanilla
2 dozen chocolate kiss candies

I.  Cookies

1.  Cream butter and sugar.  Add egg yolk, milk, and vanilla; cream until fluffy.
2.  Combine flour, cocoa, and salt.  Mix well into creamed mixture, then chill one hour.
3.  Preheat oven to 350.
4.  Form dough into 24 balls roughly one inch across.  (Note:  Now that I read this back, this is probably way way too big.  Think more like 1/2 to 3/4 inch!)
5.  Lightly beat egg white; dip doughballs therein before rolling them in chopped nuts.  Place on lightly greased cookie sheet and press thumb into center of each.
6.  Bake 10-12 minutes, until centers are just set.

II.  Filling

7.  Combine filling ingredients (minus kisses), mixing until smooth.  Spoon a tiny dollop into each cookie.
8.  Gently press kisses into place and let cool slightly.
